Welcome

Few people arrive with this city top of the list.

Palmerston North sits in the middle of the Manawatū plain, ninety minutes north of Wellington, with a mountain range twenty-five minutes east and thirty kilometres of dune coast half an hour west. It is flat, green, and almost entirely unglamorous.

It is also a base hospital serving a large region, and one of a small number of centres in New Zealand delivering radiation oncology. That is a serious clinical offer for a city of ninety thousand people — and Massey University next door gives it a young, international, research-minded character it would not otherwise have.

The trade here is the cleanest in this collection. National pay, among the cheapest housing of any North Island city with a base hospital, and a ten-minute commute. What you give up is the skyline and the sea. Most people find that a better bargain than they expected.

Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Papaioea.

Sophie’s insight

Palmerston North is the one I have to talk people into looking at, and the one they thank me for afterwards. Complex cancer work in a city where you can buy a house on one salary, ten minutes from the hospital — that combination barely exists anywhere else in New Zealand.
