The region everyone asks for by name.

A long, warm curve of coast facing north-east into the Pacific, wrapped around a working harbour. More than two thousand two hundred hours of sunshine a year, twenty kilometres of unbroken ocean beach, and a volcanic cone at the end of it that half the city walks around before work.

Tauranga is now New Zealand’s fifth-largest city and has been its fastest-growing for most of two decades. There are two public hospitals in the region — the base hospital here and a smaller one in Whakatāne, eighty minutes east — both run by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, both serving a population expanding faster than the services around it.

For a clinician the trade is unusual for this collection. The lifestyle is the best case any region in it can make. The housing is the most expensive relative to local wages. Both halves are true, and this guide does not soften either.

People come to the Bay for the beach and stay for the work, which is the opposite of what they expect. A service growing this fast gives you real room to build something. My one piece of advice: rent for a year before you buy, and drive your commute at half past seven on a Tuesday before you sign anything.
