The Waikato’s weekends are about reach. Nowhere else in New Zealand puts a surf coast, a cave system, a volcanic lake, a peninsula of white-sand beaches and a major city all within two hours of the same front door.
Reach, measured from Hamilton
Driving times, to scale against each other. The marked row is the one that surprises people: one of the best surf breaks in the world sits forty-five minutes from the ward.

Indicative driving times. Few front doors anywhere open onto this many different landscapes inside two hours.
Raglan
Forty-five minutes west, on a winding road through the hills, sits one of the best surf breaks in the world. Manu Bay’s long left-hand point break draws people from everywhere, and the town around it has stayed deliberately scruffy — galleries, cafés, a harbour, black sand and not a single high-rise.
You do not have to surf. Plenty of Hamilton people drive out for the harbour, the walk up Karioi, or fish and chips at the wharf on a Friday evening.
Underground, and up the mountain
Waitomo
An hour south. Limestone caves lit by glowworms, plus black-water rafting and some serious caving for those who want it.
The Coromandel
Ninety minutes north-east: Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, and a peninsula of bays that gets busy at New Year and is empty the rest of the time.
Lake Karāpiro and the river trails
Twenty minutes east. Rowing, cycling and the Te Awa river ride, which runs most of the way from Ngāruawāhia to Cambridge.
The central plateau
Taupō two hours, the volcanoes and the ski fields around three and a half. Close enough for a long weekend, far enough not to be casual.
Four ordinary weekends
The local one
Farmers market, the Gardens, a ride on the riverside path, and dinner in the city. Fifteen minutes of driving all weekend.
The coast one
Out to Raglan early, surf or walk, fish and chips, home by dark. The most common Waikato Saturday there is.
The tourist-in-your-own-region one
Waitomo, Hobbiton at Matamata, or the Coromandel. All the things people fly in for, an hour from your house.
The Auckland one
Ninety minutes up the expressway for a concert, a game, an exhibition or the airport. Then ninety minutes back to a house you could afford.
Horses, boats and bikes
Cambridge is the centre of New Zealand’s thoroughbred industry and home to the national cycling velodrome; Lake Karāpiro hosts international rowing. If any of those are your sport, this is one of the best places in the country to pursue it seriously. If none of them are, they still make for a good Saturday spectating.
What you give up
You give up the coast being immediate — forty-five minutes is close, but it is not ten. You give up a big-city cultural calendar, and you accept that the best of it is up the road in Auckland. You give up dramatic scenery on your doorstep; the Waikato is green and pleasant rather than spectacular.
What you get is reach, space, and the time and money to use both.
A weekend range no other city has
This is the Waikato’s strongest argument, and it is an unusual one. Very few places let you surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon, or choose between a thermal spa, a limestone cave, a black-sand beach and an alpine crossing without any of them being more than a couple of hours away.
45 min · Raglan
One of the best left-hand point breaks in the world, a good small town, and black-sand beaches. The standard Waikato Saturday.
20 min · Cambridge
Tree-lined, English-feeling and the centre of New Zealand’s thoroughbred industry. The Avantidrome, the Te Awa river ride and good food.
1 hr · Waitomo
Limestone caves, glow-worms and black-water rafting. Touristy and still remarkable.
1 hr · Rotorua
Geothermal parks, hot pools, mountain biking in Whakarewarewa Forest, and the centre of Māori cultural tourism.
90 min · Taupō
The lake, the trout, Huka Falls and the Tongariro Crossing beyond it. A weekend on its own.
2 hrs · The Coromandel
Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove and the peninsula’s bays. Busy in summer, beautiful out of it.
2.5 hrs · Ruapehu
The North Island’s ski fields. A long day trip or an easy weekend, and the reason people here own both a surfboard and skis.
In town
Hamilton Gardens — free, International Garden of the Year in 2014, and better than anyone expects. Plus the river walkways, the lake, and a growing food and music scene around the centre.
Being sensible outdoors
Beaches have rips. Raglan and the west coast are surf beaches with strong currents. Swim between the flags where they exist, and treat unpatrolled coast with real respect.
The sun is fierce even when it is cool. New Zealand’s UV index is high and burns happen quickly.
Caves and thermal areas are managed sites for a reason — stick to the marked tracks at Waitomo and around Rotorua.
The short version
Surf at forty-five minutes, caves at an hour, the Coromandel at ninety, Auckland at ninety, and a house with a garden to come home to.
