Welcome

The region people drive through, and then move to.

The Waikato is the part of New Zealand most people drive through. That is a mistake worth correcting: it holds a tertiary hospital, the country’s longest river, a surf coast and the seat of the Māori King.

Hamilton sits at the centre of it, on a bend of the river. One of the youngest and fastest-growing cities in the country, and one that has spent a decade quietly becoming a much better place to live.

For a clinician the arithmetic is unusually simple. Tertiary work and a broad rural network, ninety minutes from Auckland, in a city where a family home with a garden is an ordinary purchase.

Nau mai, haere mai ki Kirikiriroa.

Sophie’s insight

The Waikato is the one people overlook because they have only ever driven through it. Tertiary complexity and rural breadth in the same job, identical national pay, and a house with a garden. Raglan on a Saturday is the part nobody expects.
