The Waikato’s argument is arithmetic. Health New Zealand pays national agreement rates, so your salary is the same one you would earn in Auckland — ninety minutes up the road, where the same house costs roughly twice as much.
Why we don’t print prices
We used to print a weekly rent and a monthly budget table here. We have taken them out. A figure that was true when a page was written is misleading a year later, and a candidate who plans a move around a stale number is worse off than one who plans around none.
What does not go stale is the shape of a month, and the judgement about which lines will surprise you. For today’s actual numbers use the calculators at the foot of the page, and use them to compare Waikato against the city you are leaving. That is the only comparison that decides anything.
The three numbers that matter
What things cost
The proportions, for one person on a mid-range budget. Proportions move slowly; prices move every quarter. Rent takes just over half the month — on a contract paying exactly what it would pay in Auckland.
That rent line is the whole argument for the Waikato: national agreement pay, ninety minutes from Auckland, and a house that costs roughly half what the same house costs up the road.
Indicative figures that change over time. Use them as a shape, not a quote.
The Auckland comparison
This is the calculation almost everyone runs, so it is worth setting out plainly. Your pay does not change. Your housing cost roughly halves. Your commute drops from forty minutes to fifteen. Against that, you add a second car, and you accept that anything metropolitan is ninety minutes away.
For a single clinician the sums are good. For a family buying a house they are transformative — the difference is usually measured in years of mortgage, not dollars a week.
The town discount
Tax, KiwiSaver, banking and sending money home are national topics, covered in Money, tax & banking.
Where the money goes
Two things shape a Waikato budget more than anything else, and neither is obvious from a salary comparison.
The first is that housing here costs roughly half what the equivalent does in Auckland, and the gap is widest on family homes. A three or four-bedroom house with a garden and a garage, fifteen minutes from the hospital, is an ordinary purchase on a clinical salary. In Auckland the same household budget buys a townhouse and a longer commute.
The second is that almost everything else costs about the national average. Groceries in New Zealand are expensive by international standards and the Waikato is no exception, though being surrounded by farmland means produce, meat and dairy from markets and gate sales are good value.
Power bills sit between the North and South Island extremes — the Waikato gets cold, still winter mornings but rarely sustained cold, so heating costs are moderate. Damp is the bigger issue than cold, and a dehumidifier is a sensible purchase.
Two household budgets
Indicative New Zealand dollars as at July 2026, excluding tax, KiwiSaver and student loan repayments. Money, tax & banking works out what lands in your account.
- Flights home. Hamilton Airport covers domestic; long-haul means Auckland, ninety minutes away. Budget the drive, the parking and the extra day.
- Adult dental is private in New Zealand, as everywhere. A check-up runs into three figures.
- Setting up. Bond and rent in advance, a car, whiteware and furniture. Most people spend more than they planned in the first two months.
Auckland pay, Waikato housing, and ninety minutes between the two. It is the most straightforward financial case of any New Zealand destination.

- Numbeo cost-of-living calculator — the most complete comparison tool, and the one most clinicians already use. Crowd-sourced, so treat it as a ballpark.
- Expatistan — the same idea with a cleaner side-by-side. Worth running as a sanity check when Numbeo looks off.
- Tenancy Services market rent — official bond-lodgement data by area, and the most reliable rent figure in New Zealand.
- Stats NZ — official and slower, and the one to trust on the direction of travel.
