Clinical pay is national, so your salary in Whāngārei is the same as in Auckland. Northland housing is among the cheapest in the country. That gap is the financial case — tempered by fuel, distance and a thinner market.
Why we don’t print prices
We used to print a weekly rent and a monthly budget table here. We have taken them out. A figure that was true when a page was written is misleading a year later, and a candidate who plans a move around a stale number is worse off than one who plans around none.
What does not go stale is the relationship between places — which suburb, ring or region you choose — and the judgement about which costs catch people out. For today’s actual numbers use the calculators at the foot of the page, and use them to compare Northland against the city you are leaving. That is the only comparison that decides anything.
The gap, and what eats into it
New Zealand’s public health pay comes from national collective agreements, so the figure on your contract does not change with the region. Northland housing costs a fraction of Auckland’s, and less than Wellington’s or Christchurch’s. On paper the saving is the largest of any destination in this guide.
Three things eat into it. You will drive far more, and fuel in rural Northland is generally dearer than in the cities. The retail market is smaller, so some goods cost more or arrive slower, and a serious shopping trip may mean Auckland. And if your family needs specialist care that isn’t available locally, that is a day and a tank of petrol.
Net of all that, most clinicians are still meaningfully better off here than in Auckland, and the difference shows up as a mortgage you can service on one salary rather than two.
Everyday prices
Indicative New Zealand dollars as at July 2026. Prices move; treat these as a shape.
Two household budgets
Indicative New Zealand dollars per month as at July 2026, for a household living moderately. Your own numbers will differ — treat this as a shape to sanity-check against, not a quote.
The two budgets below, at true relative scale. Northland’s cheap housing is real — and it is not what decides a family’s month.
Midpoints of the two tables below, both costed on the winter power line. Rent is the largest line in each — cheap by national comparison, but still the biggest thing either household pays. What changes the shape is the lines a single clinician does not carry at all: childcare alone is roughly half that household’s entire month, and the family also runs two cars instead of one and more than double the grocery bill. Those are what decide whether a family’s move works, not the rent.
Excludes tax, KiwiSaver, student loan repayments, a deposit and flights home. Money, tax & banking works out what lands in your account.
The Northland-specific costs
- Flights home. Every long-haul trip starts with a drive to Auckland. Budget the fuel, the parking and the extra day.
- Adult dental. Private in New Zealand, as everywhere. A check-up runs into three figures, and specialist dental work may mean travelling.
- The car. Buy something reliable. Gravel, salt air and distance are hard on vehicles, and repairs are a fact of Northland life.
- Same national pay on the cheapest housing in this guide — the largest gap of any destination we cover.
- Fuel and distance are the real offsets. Budget generously for both, and for two cars.
- Power bills are lower than the south, but a dehumidifier through winter is money well spent.
These are live and updated continuously. Put the city you are leaving in the other box.
- Numbeo cost-of-living calculator — the most complete comparison tool, and the one most clinicians already use. Crowd-sourced, so treat it as a ballpark.
- Expatistan — the same idea with a cleaner side-by-side. Worth running as a sanity check when Numbeo looks off.
- Tenancy Services market rent — official bond-lodgement data by area, and the most reliable rent figure in New Zealand.
- Stats NZ — official and slower, and the one to trust on the direction of travel.
