Northland is a long peninsula with two coasts, three hundred kilometres of it, and nowhere more than forty kilometres from the sea. It is the warmest region in New Zealand, the greenest, and the one where the country’s history begins.

Whangārei is the only city — around 55,000 people on a harbour, with the region’s base hospital. Beyond it: the Bay of Islands, the Far North, and the kauri coast in the west. Around a third of Northlanders identify as Māori, the highest of any region, and te ao Māori is part of clinical practice here rather than an add-on.

For a clinician the trade is clear. Generalist practice with real breadth, on the cheapest housing in this guide, twenty minutes from a beach. Against that: distance, a thin services market, and some of the highest deprivation in the country. Both halves are true.
