The weekend is the argument for New South Wales. One state holds surf coasts, a world-heritage mountain range, the country’s oldest wine valley, snowfields and the edge of the outback — and most of it is reachable between Friday evening and Sunday night.
Nearly nine hundred parks
900National parks and reserves, near enough
It is the number that makes this state’s weekend argument concrete: surf coasts, a World Heritage sandstone range, the country’s oldest wine valley, snowfields and the edge of the outback, all inside one state. Wherever you settle in New South Wales — the harbour, a coast city or an inland referral town — one of them is about twenty minutes away.
Which is the real reason so much of this chapter is reachable between Friday evening and Sunday night.
The coast
The ocean pools
A hundred-odd sea baths carved into the rocks from Palm Beach to Eden — free, spectacular, and swimmable almost year-round. Bondi Icebergs is the famous one; locals each defend their own.
The coast walks
Bondi to Coogee is the classic; the Royal National Park’s coast track the serious one; every coastal town keeps its own headland loop for after work.
Surf, learnable and endless
Beach breaks the whole length of the state, surf schools in every town, and nippers on Sunday mornings for the kids. It is a culture you join, not just a sport.
The South Coast
Jervis Bay’s white sand, the oyster estuaries, quiet national parks — the unhurried weekend two to three hours from Sydney.
The North Coast
Port Macquarie, Coffs, Byron and the subtropical far north — the classic summer road trip, or a short flight.
Whales, in season
The humpback highway runs the length of the coast May to November. From the right headland, a commute-adjacent spectacle.
The mountains and the inland
The Blue Mountains
World-heritage sandstone country ninety minutes from Sydney — the Three Sisters, canyon walks, winter fires and autumn villages. The all-year default day trip.
The Hunter Valley
Cellar doors, vineyard restaurants and hot-air balloons an hour from Newcastle, two from Sydney. The easiest weekend away in the state.
The Snowies
Australia skis — a real alpine season within a long drive, and summer high-country walking around Kosciuszko the rest of the year.
Orange & Mudgee
Cool-climate wine, autumn colour and food festivals over the range — the inland weekend Sydney is slowly discovering.
The outback
Broken Hill, Mungo’s ancient lakebeds, and red-dirt horizons — a proper expedition, and worth doing once a year.
National parks everywhere
Nearly nine hundred parks and reserves. Wherever you settle, one is twenty minutes away.
