The everyday

Food, the water & the everyday

Mandurah Guide · Chapter 8 of 9

In Mandurah the estuary sets the table. The water is not just scenery here — it is where a lot of the food, and the weekends, come from.

Crabbing and the catch

The Peel estuary is famous for its blue swimmer crabs, and crabbing — by scoop or drop net, to the local size and bag rules — is a local institution. The city throws a festival for it each year. Fresh seafood, the marina’s fish and chips, and waterfront cafes and restaurants along the rebuilt foreshore round it out.

The ordinary week

Beyond the water, an ordinary week looks like markets and coffee on the foreshore, kids’ sport, and the beach or the estuary after work while the light lasts. It is an outdoors-first, unhurried rhythm — part of the appeal, and part of what people mean when they say it is quieter than a capital.

In one line

Crabs, the marina and the foreshore — the estuary is the centre of the everyday. If a water-centred, outdoors week is what you are after, this is the draw.
