This guide covers two districts that work as one region: Queenstown Lakes — Queenstown, Wānaka, Arrowtown — and the drier inland basins around Cromwell, Alexandra and Clyde. Sixty-five thousand permanent residents, ringed by mountains, in the only continental climate in New Zealand.

Two facts govern a clinical life here. There is no base hospital — care runs through small rural hospitals and a strong community network, and anything complex travels three hours to Dunedin. And Queenstown and Wānaka are the least affordable places to live in the country relative to local income, with rentals scarce as well as expensive.

We say all that first because the landscape needs no advocacy. Four ski fields inside an hour, lakes you swim in, an autumn people cross the world for, and direct flights to Australia from a town of twenty-eight thousand. The question was never whether it’s beautiful. It’s whether it works for you — and this guide is written to help you answer that.
