Tasmania costs less than the mainland capitals and more than the postcard suggests. In practice: day-to-day life is gentle on the wallet, Hobart’s rental market is tight, and the two lines newcomers underestimate are heating and the car.
Why we don’t print prices
We used to print a weekly rent and a monthly budget table here. We have taken them out. A figure that was true when a page was written is misleading a year later, and a candidate who plans a move around a stale number is worse off than one who plans around none.
What does not go stale is the relationship between places — which suburb, ring or region you choose — and the judgement about which costs catch people out. For today’s actual numbers use the calculators at the foot of the page, and use them to compare it against the city you are leaving. That is the only comparison that decides anything.
The headline
The structural truth holds: like-for-like housing runs well below Sydney and Melbourne, and it is housing that decides whether a salary feels big.
What everyday life costs
Day-to-day life here is gentle on the wallet. These three lines are the ones newcomers underestimate, and none of them shows up in a rent comparison.
- Heating
- Winter is cold and much of the housing stock is old. A home with a good heat pump can halve the season’s cost — make heating a search criterion, and budget for your first July.
- The car you’ll definitely own
- Public transport is light, so a reliable car, registration and insurance belong in the arrival budget, not the month-two surprise. The Spirit brings one over cheaply compared with buying twice.
- The island premium
- Everything crosses Bass Strait, so groceries, fuel and trades run slightly dearer than mainland equivalents — and family visits are flights or ferries. Two or three mainland trips a year is the likely budget line.
Where the money comes back
Housing is the big one: the gap against Sydney or Melbourne funds the rest of the island life. The short commutes give back time and fuel; school costs are unusually kind here for visa-holder families (Tasmania largely charges a modest levy rather than tuition — the detail lives in Schools & education); and the free entertainment is the national parks, which are the point of living here.
On the income side, public-health roles can salary-package part of your pay before tax — ask payroll on day one, because many international staff set it up months too late. How packaging, tax and superannuation work is national and lives in Pay & conditions.
Plan the bridge: temporary accommodation, a bond of about four weeks’ rent, the car, the winter kit and the ferry crossing. It adds up to less than an east-coast move — and the people who price it before they fly are the ones who arrive calm.
These are live and updated continuously. Put the city you are leaving in the other box.
- Numbeo cost-of-living calculator — the most complete comparison tool, and the one most clinicians already use. Crowd-sourced, so treat it as a ballpark.
- Expatistan — the same idea with a cleaner side-by-side. Worth running as a sanity check when Numbeo looks off.
- Australian Bureau of Statistics — official and slower, and the one to trust on the direction of travel.
