The festival state

Welcome to South Australia

South Australia Guide · Chapter 1 of 9

South Australia is the state where the arithmetic works: a major-hospital career for less than Sydney, Brisbane or Perth would cost, with the hills twenty minutes from the wards, the sea forty, and world-famous wine country under an hour. It asks one thing in return — that you like your city elegant and unhurried rather than enormous.

An easy, elegant capital — and a state beyond it

Adelaide holds about 1.4 million people — three-quarters of the state — on a grid Colonel Light laid out in 1836, ringed completely by parklands. It is Australia’s festival city: every March the Fringe, the Festival and WOMADelaide turn the whole centre into a stage, and for the rest of the year it runs on markets, laneway bars and cellar-door weekends. The health system is big for the city’s size, with one of the newest hospital-and-research precincts in the southern hemisphere along its main boulevard.

Beyond the city the state changes register. The Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and the Clare Valley wrap the capital in vines and stone villages; the green South-East runs to the Victorian border around the state’s largest regional city; the Riverland follows the Murray through fruit and wine country; and the gulf towns and the Eyre Peninsula face some of the wildest coast in the country, with the Flinders Ranges and the outback beyond.

The costs are a fierce, dry summer with real 40-degree runs, power bills among the dearest in the country, and a job market that is one city deep — most of the state’s medicine happens in Adelaide, and the regional centres are regional. This guide prices all three plainly.

Who wrote this
  • Ethicare is a healthcare recruitment company. This guide is free to read, asks nothing of you, and does not give visa advice.
  • South Australia is where the money and the life line up best of the mainland states, and also where “will the job market fit me?” needs the most careful answer. Where we think it’s the wrong state for you, we say so.

The state, in nine numbers

~1.85M
People in the state — about the population of Perth, spread across an area four times the size of the UK.
~1.4M
In Greater Adelaide — roughly three in four South Australians live in or around the capital.
10
Local health networks — three metropolitan, six country, and a statewide women’s and children’s service.
~50%
Of Australia’s wine is made here — the Barossa, Clare, McLaren Vale and the Hills all sit within about an hour of the city.
~30 km
Of white-sand metropolitan beach, from North Haven down to Sellicks — with a tram to the middle of it.
20 min
From the city to the Adelaide Hills. The sea is about forty. This is the “20-minute city” people talk about.
UTC+9½
The half-hour time zone — thirty minutes behind Sydney and Melbourne, with daylight saving in summer.
1836
Founded as a planned free settlement — no convicts, a fact locals will mention — and a haven for religious dissenters.
10c
Per can and bottle — the container deposit has run since 1977, and returning them is a local habit.

Six things you only learn once you’re here

The half-hour clock is real
SA runs thirty minutes behind the east coast. National meetings land at odd times, football starts at half past, and every newcomer misses one call in their first month.
Summer is dry and serious
Heatwaves run past 40° for days, then break with a cool change off the Southern Ocean you can feel arrive. A good split system is infrastructure, not comfort.
Power bills bite
SA electricity is among the dearest in the country. An efficient home and a carefully chosen energy plan matter more here than almost anywhere in Australia.
Mad March is a season
The Fringe — the biggest arts festival in the southern hemisphere — the Festival, WOMADelaide and the motorsport all land at once. Book nothing else for March.
It’s a two-degrees city
“Which school did you go to?” is an Adelaide icebreaker. Everyone seems to know everyone — which makes reputations, good and bad, travel fast.
The deli is an institution
The corner deli — part milk bar, part grocer — survives here as it does nowhere else, along with Foodland, the fiercely local supermarket.
A note on Country
  • Adelaide stands on Kaurna Country — Tarntanya, the place of the red kangaroo — and the state spans many nations: Peramangk in the Hills, Ngadjuri in the mid-north, Boandik in the South-East, Barngarla on the upper gulf, Erawirung along the river. You’ll see dual naming used widely and warmly.
  • Acknowledgement of Country opens meetings, and health services work in partnership with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. Take the cultural induction seriously — in the far north it is central to the job.

How to read this guide

Nine chapters, all of them about South Australia specifically. Anything true of Australia generally — Medicare, visas, Ahpra registration, tax, superannuation, schools — lives once in Moving to Australia.

If you read nothing else, read Why South Australia for the full case — and what we’d ask you to weigh, and Where clinicians live, because Adelaide’s villages and the country posts are decisions of a completely different kind.
