Nelson Tasman sits at the top of the South Island, wrapped around a sheltered bay in a rain shadow. Around 2,400 hours of sunshine a year — the most in New Zealand — with mountains behind, orchards and vineyards between, and warm clear water in front.

Three national parks are within reach: Abel Tasman’s golden beaches an hour north, Kahurangi and the Heaphy Track over the hill, Nelson Lakes ninety minutes south. No other city in the country can say that. Nelson also has an active community of working artists and more breweries per head than anywhere else in New Zealand.

There’s a base hospital in Nelson serving the region, with a second in Blenheim under the same district service. The costs are housing — expensive for a city of fifty-five thousand, because half the country would like to live here — and the distance from everywhere else.
