Welcome

The city that stopped apologising.

For years Brisbane was described in terms of what it wasn’t — not Sydney, not Melbourne, a big country town with a river running through it. That framing is now well out of date. Two and a half million people, a rebuilt centre, a serious food and arts scene, and a decade of Olympic infrastructure ahead of it.

For clinicians the draw is a hospital cluster with tertiary depth across the inner city and the fastest-growing health demand in the country to the north and south. And the arithmetic still works: a family house within half an hour of the wards is a workable plan here in a way it stopped being in Sydney a decade ago.

The costs are the summer — humid, stormy, and long — and a public transport network that is good along its spines and thin between them. This guide prices both plainly.

Welcome to the river city.

Warm regards — the Ethicare team

Sophie’s insight

Brisbane is the easiest Australian city to recommend to a family, and the one candidates most often underestimate. They arrive expecting a stepping stone to Sydney and then discover they can buy a house, keep the tertiary work, and be at the bay or the range by ten on a Saturday. My only caution is the summer: visit in February if you can, not July.
