Radiation Oncologist — Palmerston North
Ethicare is recruiting a Radiation Oncologist for a regional cancer treatment service in Palmerston North. It is a general radiation oncology post with room to develop a subspecialty, in a department that is building satellite treatment units and wants its consultants involved in that.
About the role
The regional cancer treatment service covers a population of over 600,000 across the Manawatū, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui, the Wairarapa and Taranaki. You would join eight radiation oncologists with a range of specialist interests, three registrars in training posts rising to four, specialist nursing staff and a psycho-oncology service, and work alongside medical oncologists, haematologists and palliative care physicians.
The kit is current: a wide-bore CT simulator, three Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators each with a six-degrees-of-freedom couch, a fourth linac being replaced with a TrueBeam, a superficial X-ray unit, RayStation planning and MOSAIQ. IMRT, VMAT, DIBH, IGRT and SBRT are all established. The service is the first in New Zealand to develop satellite radiation treatment units, in Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki, so some travel is part of the role and telehealth is used routinely.
The employer has said it is open to permanent, fixed-term or part-time arrangements, and means it. Six weeks’ annual leave, ten paid CME days a year with an allowance towards course and travel costs, and relocation support for international appointments are all part of the package.
What the role involves
- General radiation oncology across the region, with a subspecialty interest developed over time
- Multidisciplinary work with medical oncology, haematology and palliative care
- Contributing to the satellite treatment units in Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki, with some travel and regular telehealth
- Supervising registrars in training posts
- Service development in a department that is expanding
About you
- Eligible for vocational registration in Radiation Oncology with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- FRANZCR or an equivalent recognised qualification
- Comfortable with modern techniques — IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, DIBH, IGRT
- Interested in a regional service, and in the reach that satellite units and telehealth give it
