Consultant Ophthalmologist — Palmerston North
Ethicare is recruiting a Consultant Ophthalmologist for a regional eye service in Palmerston North. They want a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest — any subspecialty except vitreoretinal surgery would be considered — to join four locally based consultants.
About the role
The service provides specialist secondary eye care to the region: outpatient and inpatient work, support to primary care, and a contribution to the regional cancer treatment service for the lower North Island. Alongside the four consultants are three registrars, one of them a RANZCO vocational trainee, ophthalmic nurses, an orthoptist, technicians and visiting optometrists.
The equipment list is what you would hope for: OCT, argon retinal laser, YAG, selective laser trabeculoplasty, cyclodiode, Centurion phacoemulsification and Pentacam. Supervising the registrars and teaching University of Otago trainee interns is part of the week.
Six weeks’ annual leave, ten paid CME days a year with an allowance towards course and travel costs, and relocation support for international appointments are all part of the package.

About you
- Eligible for vocational registration in Ophthalmology with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- A comprehensive ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest — anything but vitreoretinal surgery is of interest
- Demonstrated clinical, management and teaching skills
- Comfortable working in, and leading within, a multidisciplinary team
