Is my overseas qualification automatically recognised?

Not necessarily. Australia and New Zealand run separate registration systems, and requirements differ considerably between professions. Some regulators have recognised, streamlined or express pathways for particular qualifications or countries; others assess every overseas qualification individually. This checker points you to the starting pathway that may be relevant to you — only the relevant regulator can decide whether your qualification meets its registration requirements.

Are qualifications from some countries more easily recognised?

Sometimes — but there is no single list of countries whose healthcare qualifications are recognised across Australia and New Zealand. Recognition is profession-specific, and regulators use different terms for it: recognised qualifications, comparable health systems, competent authority, express pathways, streamlined pathways. They are not interchangeable. The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand, for example, currently runs an International Express Pathway for eligible physiotherapists with relevant qualifications and/or unrestricted registration from the UK, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. A radiographer or psychologist from the same country follows entirely different rules — which is why we hold country conditions against a specific profession, regulator and pathway rather than as one global list.

I have a diploma rather than a bachelor's degree. Does that mean I can't register?

Accepted Answer

No — don't assume a diploma rules you out. Requirements vary between professions and regulators, and many consider the content and duration of your programme, your clinical training, your registration and your relevant experience as part of the assessment. There is no “diploma = not eligible” rule here; the checker looks at your exact profession and qualification.

Will I need to sit an exam?

Possibly, but not everyone does. Depending on the profession and the outcome of the regulator's assessment, you may be asked to complete an examination, a competence assessment, supervised practice, additional education or further documentary evidence. Others reach a recognised or streamlined pathway that doesn't involve the same process. Where the official pathway doesn't make the position unambiguous, we say additional assessment may be required rather than promising you either way.

Does my professional experience count?

Accepted Answer

It can. Some regulators weigh relevant clinical or professional experience alongside an overseas qualification; other professions are more prescriptive about the qualification itself. Your experience may form part of the regulator's assessment, depending on your profession and registration pathway — but it is not a substitute for an appropriate professional qualification.

Do I need IELTS or OET?

Not necessarily. English-language requirements depend on the profession, the regulator, and your education and professional background. Some applicants meet an accepted education or professional pathway without sitting a test; others need results from an approved test. Check the current standard for your own regulator before booking anything — requirements change, and Australian minimum test scores changed in April 2026.

Do I need registration before I start applying for jobs?

Not always. Many employers in Australia and New Zealand are happy to talk to you while registration is underway — though they will usually want to see that you have researched the right pathway, that a realistic route to registration exists, and that you have started gathering documents or submitted your application. Why does the country where I qualified matter?

Regulators assess the education and training that led to your professional qualification. Depending on the profession, they may consider your country of training, the exact qualification, the education provider, the curriculum, clinical education, professional registration, supervised practice, post-qualification experience and recent practice. That is why the checker asks where you qualified rather than your nationality — and why a country outside a streamlined pathway means a different assessment route, not a closed door.

My colleague qualified in the same country and got registered. Does that mean I will too?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Two professionals from the same country can follow different pathways: qualification, university, year of training, clinical education, professional registration and experience all bear on an application, and some professions have streamlined routes where others assess every applicant individually. Your colleague's experience is useful context — it is not a guarantee of the same outcome.

Is Australia harder to register in than New Zealand?

Not necessarily — it depends on the profession, the qualification and your own circumstances. One profession may have a straightforward New Zealand route and need additional assessment in Australia; for another, the reverse is true. Compare the requirements for your particular profession and background rather than assuming either country is easier. If you chose both in the checker, your two starting points sit side by side.

What documents should I start gathering?

Requirements differ between regulators, but internationally qualified applicants are commonly asked for some combination of: proof of identity; your professional qualification certificate; an academic transcript; evidence of clinical training; curriculum or course information; current or previous professional registration; a certificate of good standing; employment history; a CV; and English-language evidence where required. Some regulators need documents verified or supplied directly by your university or professional body — check the current official list before paying for certification or verification.

How long does international registration take?

There is no single reliable timeframe. It depends on the profession, regulator, pathway and qualification, whether your documents are complete, third-party verification, whether further information is requested, and whether an examination, competence assessment or supervised practice is required. Express or streamlined pathways can be considerably quicker than an individual qualification assessment. Where a regulator publishes a current processing time for a pathway, we show it — we won't offer a generic “six to eight weeks”.

How much will registration cost?

Costs vary considerably between professions and pathways, and there is usually more to budget for than one application fee: qualification assessment, application and registration fees, an annual practising certificate or annual registration, examination or competence assessment, document verification, certificates of good standing, English-language testing, and police or background checks. We only show amounts that carry a currency, source and last-checked date in our data — otherwise we link you straight to the regulator's current fee schedule.
